Coca-Cola originated on May 8, 1886, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Pharmacist Dr. John Stith Pemberton created the original formula at his Pemberton Chemical Company and first served it at Jacob's Pharmacy, where it was sold as a medicinal tonic for five cents a glass.
Key facts about the origin of Coca-Cola:
  • Inventor: Dr. John S. Pemberton, who created the syrup in his laboratory.
  • Name & Logo: Frank M. Robinson, Pemberton's bookkeeper, named the drink "Coca-Cola" and designed the distinct script logo.
  • Initial Formulation: It was originally a non-alcoholic version of Pemberton's French Wine Coca, created to comply with local prohibition laws.
  • Incorporation: The Coca-Cola Company was later incorporated in 1892 in Atlanta by Asa Griggs Candler, who bought the business from Pemberton.
  • Expansion: While the formula was created in 1886, bottling operations began later, with the first international bottling in Canada, Cuba, and Panama by 1906.
